Were you ever in the position where you needed to know how to whiten teeth in Photoshop? Well, we’ve all been there. Sometimes your edits need to be pristine and for that, you need to have the right tools on hand.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how you can whiten and brighten teeth in Photoshop and give your whole photo a new and very clean look.
For this tutorial, I’ll use a photo I downloaded from FreePik.com
1. Open Your Project
Before anything else, you need to have your photo opened. Simply press “Ctrl-O” and open the picture you need to edit.
2. Select The Teeth
Because you only want to whiten the teeth, you will need to select them. You can do that by using the lasso tool, or as I did for this tutorial, the Object Selection tool. At this point, it’s not a big mistake if you don’t perfectly make the selection, as you will be able to edit it after you’re done using the brush tool.
3. Create A “Hue/Saturation” Adjustment Layer
In order to change the colors to this selection alone, I’ll need to create an adjustment layer. I’ll use it to remove some of the yellow, and also to increase the lightness a little and brighten the teeth.
4. Select The “Yellows” And Adjust
As I said, you only need to work on the yellows here. Simply change the option from “Master” to “Yellows” and lower the saturation and increase the Lightness. This way, you will create whiter and brighter teeth.
For this one, I lowered the saturation to -80 and increased the lightness to +62. Even though it’s a little extreme, it’s perfect to prove a point. The teeth are much whiter and brighter, and this is what we were aiming for.
You can go around and play and add all kinds of effect to your photo this way. You don’t have to only do this on the teeth. You can change the color of someone’s eyes, hair, lips and even the skin tone.
Of course, for a normal photoshoot, you want to make sure that everything is as natural as possible. Just as you try to keep the skin tone natural when doing an edit, you will also have to do this for teeth.
5. Make The Final Edits
In order to have everything ready, you need to make sure everything is perfect. Start by choosing the “Brush” tool and making sure that your foreground color is set to black. Then, start making small adjustments on your layer. It’s important to make sure the right layer is selected, so you don’t end up painting on the picture instead.
If you want to see a quick before and after of your project, you can simply hide the adjustment layer and see how it was. If you’re not happy with your photo color correction, you can simply keep editing until you find the right combination for your photo.
And now you’re done and you know how to brighten teeth in Photoshop. It’s very easy to do it and your models will be very happy to see their new and improved portraits!
