How to Send Abandon Checkout Emails on Shopify

Send abandoned cart emails on shopify
Published 3 December 2022

Imagine the anticipation of knowing you’re about to make another sale with Customer A, only to realize that they just abandoned their would-be purchase. Luckily, you can keep this problem from happening too often by using one of Shopify’s built-in features. It allows you to send automatic emails to customers who abandon their checkout before finalising.

To send abandoned checkout emails on Shopify, go to Settings > Checkout > scroll down to “Abandoned checkout emails”. Enable the checkbox next to “Automatically send abandoned checkout emails”. Then, customize the emails to persuade customers to complete their orders.

In this post, I’ll show you how to use Shopify’s abandon checkout emails feature to ensure that your customers actually push through with their purchases and keep your sales nice and steady.

How to send abandoned checkout emails in Shopify natively

1. Go to Shopify dashboard > Settings > Checkout

The first step in setting up abandoned checkout emails is to go to your Shopify store’s Settings page. Here are the steps to take:

  1. Log in to your Shopify store
  2. From the dashboard, click on the “Settings” menu on the left-hand side of the screen

  1. Choose when you want your email to be sent out. Shopify recommends sending your abandoned checkout email 10 hours after the customer abandons their cart; however, you can adjust this timing by clicking on the appropriate timeframe under the “Send after” section
  2. Choose whether to send the email to all customers who have abandoned their checkout or only those who have already subscribed to your newsletter

3. Customize your email template (optional)

Once you’ve set the timing for your abandoned checkout email, it’s time to make sure that you are happy with the email template. If you want to customize it, you can. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Customize email” link

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you’re editing your email template:

  • Make sure that your subject line is clear yet punchy. If the average person reads it, they should know what the email is about and be encouraged to read it (as opposed to sending it straight to the “Trash” folder).
  • In the email content section, include a strong call-to-action to encourage customers to finish their purchase.
  • Similar to the subject line, the body of the email should be short enough for customers to read within a few minutes or so. Write only the information they need to know while ensuring that you maintain a friendly yet professional tone.
  • When you’re done editing your template, click on the “Save” button to update your settings.

The last step is to check how your email looks when sent to actual customers. Here’s how to do that:

  1. From the main email customization page, scroll up until you see the “Preview” button and click on it
Click "preview"
  1. A modal will show a preview of the email. Now you can click on the “Send test email” button
