How To Outline Text In Photoshop

Have you ever seen all those cool outlines and wondered how to do it yourself? It’s very easy to outline text in Photoshop, and you can easily do it in a few easy steps.

The outline is called a stroke, and you do it by editing a few simple settings. The Stroke effect gives your text a very interesting style, so you may be interested in adding it after you add new fonts in Photoshop and play with them for a while.

Let’s take a look though, at how to add and work with the stroke effect in your project.

1. Start By Creating Your Text

Needless to say, in order to add the stroke effect, you need to have your text created though. For this tutorial, I added a gradient background and chose a text to work with. The easiest way to add a gradient is to create a shape and then select the “Gradient Fill” option, and you can add the text by pressing “T” and clicking where you want it on your canvas.

2. Open The “Blending Options”

In order to add the “Stroke” effect, you need to open the “Blending Options” tab. In order to do this, you can click on the text layer you just created and simply select “Blending Options” from the list. From there, a new tab will open where you will see all its options.

3. Select The “Stroke” Effect

In the “Blending Options” tab, you will see all the effects you can apply to your text. From there, you should select the “Stroke” effect and work on the settings. You can change its size, its position, meaning if you want it inside or outside, the opacity, blend more, and the fill type and color.

You can customize your stroke effect however you want, and you can even add more of them if you’re going for a different look.

4. Adding More Strokes

If you click on the “+” sign next to the “Stroke” effect in your tab, it will create another Stroke on your text. It will be identical to the one you initially created, so you can go ahead and customize it. For this tutorial, I created two more strokes and changed the shade of purple to give it an interesting look.

You need to keep in mind that the Stroke layers act like normal layers, so their order counts. So if I were to select a smaller size for the last layer, I wouldn’t have been able to see it unless I moved it up in the hierarchy.

You can see all the effects you applied to your text in the “Layers” tab.

You can hide them if you want, or simply delete them if they’re not how you wanted. Everything is very straightforward in Photoshop, and it doesn’t take long to start learning everything.

Happily, now you know how to outline text in Photoshop and how to fully play with the “Stroke” effect!
