How to Capture Payments on Shopify [Auto & Manual]

Shopify gives you the option to decide how you want to capture funds for your orders. There are two different methods a merchant can use for capturing payment on their Shopify store; they can automatically capture payment or manually capture payment.

It’s easier to capture payment automatically, but there can also be instances where the merchant has to capture the payment manually due to a number of reasons and the type of products that you sell.

Shopify Payment Options

The default setting for Shopify is to capture card payments automatically, but you can easily change this setting for yourself.

Likewise, you can change your payment authorization settings to capture payments automatically at any time.

How to automatically capture payments for Shopify orders

Desktop

  1. Log into Shopify.
  2. Go to “Settings” > “Payments“.
  3. Go to the “Payment Capture” section on the right and click on “Manage“.

  1. Choose “Automatically Capture Payments for Orders”.

iPhone

  1. Open your “Shopify” app.
  2. Click the “Store” symbol in the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. Click on “Settings“.
  4. Click on “Payments“.
  5. Go to the “Payment Capture” section and click “Manage“.
  6. Choose “Automatically Capture Payments for Orders”.
  7. Click “Save“.

Android

  1. Open your “Shopify” app.
  2. Click the “Store” symbol in the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. Click on “Settings“.
  4. Click on “Payments“.
  5. Go to the “Payment Capture” section and click “Manage“.
  6. Choose “Automatically Capture Payments for Orders”.
  7. Click “Save“.

How to manually capture payments on Shopify orders

Make sure your store is set up to manually capture payment for orders by checking your “Payments” section.

With this option, the customer’s payment method is authorized when they order, but the merchant must manually capture the payment within the payment authorization period.

You have the option to capture full or partial payment for any number of reasons.

Desktop

  1. Log in to the “Shopify admin panel“.
  2. Then click the order you’re trying manually capture.
  3. Go to the “Order Information” page and click “Capture Payment“.
  4. In the dialog box that pops up, you can change the amount you want to capture.
  5. Click “Accept” to complete the capture.

iPhone

  1. Open your “Shopify” app.
  2. Choose the order you’re trying manually capture.
  3. In the “Authorized” section, pick “Capture Payment“.
  4. Change the amount you want to capture in the “Amount” box if you need to.
  5. Click “Accept” to complete the capture.

Android

  1. Open your “Shopify” app.
  2. Choose the order you’re trying manually capture.
  3. On the “Order Details” screen, choose “Capture Payment“.
  4. Change the amount you want to capture in the “Amount to capture” box if you need to.
  5. Click “Accept” to complete the capture.
