If you’re running an online store and you need to sell digital products, then you may be a little conflicted about the app you should use. Of course, not everything you find is reliable or secure, and this is where we come in! Let’s take a look at the best 4 digital download apps for Shopify, so you can choose reliability for your store!
1. Digital Assets – Sell Digital Products
Downloadable Digital Assets is the most popular and trusted digital product delivery app in Shopify’s app store. The app delivers the digital downloads directly to your customers after purchasing.
It’s even possible to deliver personalised files to your customers after they have placed an order. The app also features a powerful fraud-protection system that will halt the fulfilment of high risk orders until further verification that the order is genuine.
Other features include download links in customers’ accounts, via email, and on the Thank You page. Also the ability to import all previous orders before using the app so you can still send download links to all your customers.
They have a super cool feature where you can click a button and the app will import all previous orders from before you installed the app. This feature is useful because if a customer asks for you to send a new download email, then you can go to the old orders and resend with the click of a button.
It’s built by a team of experienced Shopify developers at Massive Monkey Applications.
This app works on four different plans, and the smallest one is free. You get 5GB of storage, one attachment per product, unlimited products. However, if you decide to upgrade to the biggest plan, which is only $20/month, you get up to 30GB storage and all the features.
The developers allow higher storage amounts, all you need to do is contact them and they will set up a custom plan. From my experience, their support is incredible. I always get a reply pretty much instantly and that’s what really makes me trust the developers.
- Free plan
- Starter – $5/month
- Scale – $15/month
- Professional – $25/month
The team at Massive Monkey have really thought about how they can make the app, super easy to use. All you need to do is install the app, upload the files and attach them to the products! Then you’re done.
The user interface is the best out of all the digital downloads apps. It’s ultra easy to use and designed beautifully.
All of your products sync automatically as soon as it’s installed so there’s no need to manually add products yourself.
Digital Assets is easily the best digital downloads app out of all options on Shopify. It was also awarded a staff pick by the Shopify App Store Staff!
- Send download emails from own email address
- Attach personalised digital files to customers order after they have ordered
- Show digital downloads in customer accounts
- Ultra fast download speeds
- Customisable email templates
- Very quick and easy setup, just 3 steps
- Super easy-to-use interface
- No file size limit within your plan
- Once customers gets a refund, access to files will be removed
- Attach unlimited files per product
- Attach URLs as downloads
- Does not support license keys
2. Digital Downloads
Digital Downloads is developed by Shopify. It’s easy to use, and also free. Great for beginner stores starting out selling digital downloads on Shopify, but we would still recommend Downloadable Digital Assets as the number one choice.
It’s great for basic use, however, there are many limitations that come with this app. It doesn’t have any extra features or upgrade options, and you can’t send files larger than 5GB. Also you can only attach one file per product.
It’s as simple as you can get. But if you want customisable features, then you may need to upgrade to a better app. One issue with this is that it can cause a huge pain for previous customers not being able to access their links delivered by this app once you switch. Probably best to start with a professional app with a free plan.
Pricing & storage
Even though this app is a little limited, it’s free to use by anyone who needs it, and that’s a huge plus. You don’t have an overall storage limit, but you can only upload 5GB per file.
Digital Downloads is super easy to use. Just like Downloadable Digital Assets, it works within Shopify and doesn’t take you to another website. Once installed, it takes you to a products page, where you can attach a file to a product. Really simple but limited features.
The apps navigation is laid out for maximum ease-of-use for beginners. You can’t go wrong with an app built by Shopify if you are new store owner.
- Basic intuitive interface
- Created by Shopify for basic stores
- Unlimited storage amount (but each file is capped at 5GB)
- No upgrade options
- Limited features
- Limited to 5GB Maximum per file upload
- Only attach one file per product
- Cannot customise the download email template
- Cannot add downloads to customer accounts
3. Single music
Single music is considered to be the best digital download app if you’re selling music online.
This app offers you the possibility of adding audio previews, lossless or MP3 tracks and your songs can be bundled with physical products. They have a bunch of features for creating campaigns synced with platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and others. Single Music also allows Livestream ticketing which is a unique feature for Shopify apps.
Single music comes with three plans, and it includes a free one. However, it’s not 100% free. For every song, you pay 15¢, and there’s a cap at $2/album. You don’t need to pay this fee in the paid plans, and you also get daily analysis and conversion analytics.
The app doesn’t work within Shopify unfortunately. Once opened, you will be redirected to another website in a new tab to sign up. Then once you have signed up, you can begin setting up the settings. It’s not the easiest app to use, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes much easier.
- Free plan available
- Great for music
- Audio previews
- Livestream ticketing
- Syncs with music platforms
- Create campaigns
- Scheduled delivery automation
- Not the most intuitive interface
- Not used within Shopify platform (need signup)
4. Send Owl
Send Owl has been around for some time now, and even though it’s popular, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best out there. They claim to have proven performance but from our experience it may seem their app is quite, let’s say, old-school.
Send Owl sends the products to the customers via email and the Thank You page. Each plan is limited to a number of products which can be frustrating if you have a good amount of them. The products are not automatically synced once you have installed on Shopify unfortunately. You will need to manually add each product, then add the files or URLs.
Their app does have some brilliant features once you get set up though. They boast compatibility with using license keys for software, PDF Stamping and attaching URLs as a download.
Pricing & storage
Send owl doesn’t have any free plans, but you get a 30-day free trial. The smallest plan includes 1GB of storage and up to 10 products, while the biggest one goes up to 250 products and 15GB storage.
The user interface of Send Owl isn’t the easiest to get your head around. After install, you will be redirected to the website in a new tab. So this means it doesn’t work within Shopify. Here, you can setup your products manually, then attach a file, URL, software with license keys or a drip. It has a proven system that works, but it’s just a little complicated for beginners.
The dashboard navigation is a little bit confusing too.
- Good interface for music
- Usable on other platforms other than Shopify
- License key generator for software
- PDF Stamping
- Once customer gets a refund, they lose access to files
- Attach URLs as downloads. For example – using a DropBox download link.
- Very limited storage space (but this is OK because music is small)
- Complicated setup as you need to sign up an account on their website
My personal recommendation for the best digital download app for Shopify is Downloadable Digital Assets. It’s the best, there’s no doubt about that. It’s got the most features, the easiest interface, quickest setup, fastest download speeds & better features.
Easy to use
Limited but simple
Easy to use
Ease of use
Super simple interface. Clear 4-step instructions after install. Simple as uploading a file, then attaching it to your Shopify products & you're done.
Very easy setup. Once installed, you can attach one file per product. Then that's it, all will be set up.
A little bit of a complicated set up. Need to sign up to their website then create campaigns etc.
Not the simplest. You need to add each product from your Shopify store one-by-one. They are not synced automatically.
Free but limited
15c/song. Cap of $2/album
Very quick and easy. Works within Shopify and no signup required.
Install the app and upload files straight away. Products and variants are automatically synced once installed.
All you need to do is upload your files and attach them to the products.
Very fast. Works within Shopify and no sign up required.
You can attach files to products directly after install.
A little complicated, but easy once you figure it out. It only works with music files, so you are limited to only using lossless or MP3.
Not easy. Doesn't work within Shopify. For a start, this is a standalone application so you need to do everything extra to connect to Shopify.
You need to go to their website to sign up and setup before you can upload anything. Then you need to connect the products to Shopify.
